Film Project: Midterm Submission

Image
This is the first version of my short film for my Media Studies project submission.  There are some changes I would like to make, but I am very proud of my first draft.  I did make some changes to my script so I will edit it to make it final draft.

Film Project Planning: Casting

The two actors I cast in my short film are Elena Bretoi and Derrick Lazama to play the couple of Kate and Jake.  This will be a challenge in filming because both of these people hate each other in real life.  It will be a struggle to get them to work together and as a couple for filming.  I am hoping that we can all be professional and understand the importance of assuming the character when acting.  I will also be utilizing my father, John Knuth, as the dad in my film.  He will be an easy person to work with, as he understands that my ideas as the director are important.  He will take my notes and apply them to his acting.  I am excited to see ho filming goes and hopefully I can keep my two lead actors from fighting with each other.

Film Project Planning: Script, Locations, and Overall Plan

Between Saturday, Sunday, and today, I completed my script for my film project.  My film starts with the lead female, Kate, sitting in a car.  She is looking out the window and she is voicing over the scene.  The screen switches to Kate sitting at a grave with a bouquet of flowers.  She is talking to the grave, which belongs to her boyfriend, Jake, who had just passed away.  Kate gives her monologue to Jake's grave as the scene switches from the cemetery to Kate in the car.  Kate's father is driving the car and he says, "I'm so sorry, sweetie.  He was a good man."  He reaches over and grabs her hand.  Kate complies for a second and then she pulls her hand away.  She looks out the window and cries silently.  She slowly closes her eyes as the voice over of her thoughts begins.  The screen goes black and fades through a series of short takes of the relationship Kate had with Jake.  The first memory is of the of them at the be...

Film Project Research 5: Prom

The fifth film opening I watched in research for my project was Prom. Short Summary of Opening:  The opening of this movie begins with a slide show of pictures as the main character, Nova, talks about prom.  The main actors and directors are listed in the beginning credits along with other notable people.  Nova speaks and it is also a voice-over.  The collage of pictures ends and the screen switches to Nova putting up prom posters.  Her friends approach and are all wondering if she'd been asked to prom yet.  She says "no" and keeps hanging up posters.  She has a little run in with the school bad boy and it is foreshadowed that this is the love interest in the story. Analysis of Opening:  The movie opens with a collage of pictures that move around.  They feature the lead actors in the movie and important credits.  The camera moves in all different directions to show a variety of different pictures and escalate the things Nova is saying...

Film Project Research 4: Everything, Everything

The fourth film opening I watched in research for my project was Everything, Everything. Short Summary of Opening:  The opening of this movie begins with the main girl, Maddy, sitting on her hammock and looking out the window.  She is imagining what her life would be like if she wasn't sick.  Maddy has SCID, so she is unable to go outside.  She walks over to the window and it disappears.  She is now on a beach and walking towards the ocean.  Maddy floats in the ocean as the title appears on screen.  Maddy is still talking in a voice over and she discusses what her disease is and why she cannot go outside.  She is sitting in a chair and staring out the window.  As she is doing this she sees a young man, roughly her age, moving into the house next door.  They exchange glances and wave. Analysis of Opening:  The film opens with a mid-shot of Maddy sitting in her hammock chair.  The resolution of the picture is blurry and as the...

Film Project Research 3: Endless Love

The third film opening I watched in research for my was Endless Love. Short Summary of Opening:  The opening of this movie begins with a close up on the face of a girl who we come to find out is named Jade.  There is a voiceover of a boy named David as he talks about Jade.  These are his thoughts about Jade and they outline who she is as a character.  We learn that Jade's brother died and since then she never talked to anyone at school or made any friends.  Jade and David are at their graduation ceremony, but they never speak directly to each other.  The opening scene finishes with a group of girls who ask Jade for a photo.  She thinks they want her to be in the picture and she walks over to them, but in reality they just wanted her to take the photo.  This goes along with David's description of her as being almost invisible. Analysis of Opening:  The film opens with a close up of Jade's face as she is standing at her high school graduatio...
