Film Project Research 4: Everything, Everything
The fourth film opening I watched in research for my project was Everything, Everything.
Short Summary of Opening: The opening of this movie begins with the main girl, Maddy, sitting on her hammock and looking out the window. She is imagining what her life would be like if she wasn't sick. Maddy has SCID, so she is unable to go outside. She walks over to the window and it disappears. She is now on a beach and walking towards the ocean. Maddy floats in the ocean as the title appears on screen. Maddy is still talking in a voice over and she discusses what her disease is and why she cannot go outside. She is sitting in a chair and staring out the window. As she is doing this she sees a young man, roughly her age, moving into the house next door. They exchange glances and wave.
Analysis of Opening: The film opens with a mid-shot of Maddy sitting in her hammock chair. The resolution of the picture is blurry and as the camera zooms in on her face it becomes more refined. There is a shot-reverse-shot in the editing when Maddy looks outside. The screen changes from her face to outside and back to her face. She walks up to the window and the close-up of her face shows her desire to be outside. She imagines the glass falling away and being at the beach. An over-the-shoulder shot shows the ocean and Maddy walks towards the water. A major aspect of this opening is the introduction of Olly to the story. There was the use of an eye-line match when Maddy spots Olly. This shows her perspective from her room. Maddy and Olly make eye contact and it is portrayed to the audience that this is the bud of a romance.
Film Information: The budget for this film was $10 million and it made over $34million in the United States. This movie was nominated for 5 awards and it won one of them. This film was nominated for two Image awards; Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture. This film also won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie: Drama along with nominations for Choice Movie Actor: Drama and Choice Movie Actress: Drama.
