Film Project Research 5: Prom
The fifth film opening I watched in research for my project was Prom.
Short Summary of Opening: The opening of this movie begins with a slide show of pictures as the main character, Nova, talks about prom. The main actors and directors are listed in the beginning credits along with other notable people. Nova speaks and it is also a voice-over. The collage of pictures ends and the screen switches to Nova putting up prom posters. Her friends approach and are all wondering if she'd been asked to prom yet. She says "no" and keeps hanging up posters. She has a little run in with the school bad boy and it is foreshadowed that this is the love interest in the story.
Analysis of Opening: The movie opens with a collage of pictures that move around. They feature the lead actors in the movie and important credits. The camera moves in all different directions to show a variety of different pictures and escalate the things Nova is saying. The screen then switches to a mid-shot of Nova hanging a poster. She continues through the halls hanging up pictures and all of the other students flock to the posters. The last poster she hangs up is by a group of girls standing next to the school "bad-boy," Jessie. The scene is set up so the girls looking at the poster are in the foreground, left side of the screen and Jessie is further back at his locker. Next there is a shot-reverse-shot when Jessie notices Nova and they lock eyes. The short takes show energy between the two which shows that this is going to be the couple in the movie.
Film Information: The budget for this film was $8 million and it made over $10 million in the box office. This movie was nominated for one award, but it did not receive it.
