Film Project Research 3: Endless Love
The third film opening I watched in research for my was Endless Love.
Short Summary of Opening: The opening of this movie begins with a close up on the face of a girl who we come to find out is named Jade. There is a voiceover of a boy named David as he talks about Jade. These are his thoughts about Jade and they outline who she is as a character. We learn that Jade's brother died and since then she never talked to anyone at school or made any friends. Jade and David are at their graduation ceremony, but they never speak directly to each other. The opening scene finishes with a group of girls who ask Jade for a photo. She thinks they want her to be in the picture and she walks over to them, but in reality they just wanted her to take the photo. This goes along with David's description of her as being almost invisible.
Analysis of Opening: The film opens with a close up of Jade's face as she is standing at her high school graduation ceremony. The camera pans and moves through the crowd as happy graduates rejoice with each other. There are short takes of people hugging, dancing, cheering, and taking photographs, but Jade is standing perfectly still amongst this chaos. This contrast in movement shows how Jade is separated from her peers and doesn't seem to fit in. A majority of the audio is a voice over. David, a boy at the school, is standing at a distance staring at Jade and thinking about her. This gives the audience insight on who she is and foreshadows that Jade and David will meet. This opening is daily simple in complexity because it includes a lot of very similar shots to show the divide between the graduating class and Jade.
