Distribution Research: Fault in Our Stars

When the Fault in Our Stars came out in theatres, it was in competition with the film Edge of Tomorrow.  Opening for the Fault in Our Stars made $48.2 million, which beat the $29.1 million made on the Edge of Tomorrow.  When this movie was released, it had a lot of competition in the theatre. The Fault in Our Stars spent several weeks in the theatre and was released to streaming sites and as a DVD.  It is now open for viewing on Netflix, Hulu, and HBO.  This was a highly successful model for this movie because the target audience was mainly tens, young adults, and people who read the novel.  These individuals are part of the digital age, so VOD is a useful tool that was utilized.
