Film Project Research 2: If I Stay
The second film opening I watched in research for my was If I Stay.
Short Summary of Opening: The opening of this movie begins with an arial shot of snowy mountains while Mia speaks in a voice over. She is talking about herself and her family, including her mother, father, and little brother. The voice over ends and dialogue between the four family members begins. They hear on the news that an approaching snow storm has cancelled school, so the family is in their kitchen talking. Mia talks about her cello practices and a boy named Adam, which we learn is her long-distance boyfriend. The opening ends when Mia's parents convince her to go with them out to the farm to spend the day together.
Analysis of Opening: The film opens with an arial shot of snowy mountains. There is a lot of camera movement in the very beginning, going across different scenery. The camera then zooms in on one house, which we find out is where the main character, Mia, lives. This is a useful technique because it lays out the setting. It is a snowy winter and we've been introduced to the family household. The camera then moves into the house and throughout the rooms following different people. This is used to show the busy morning as the children are getting ready for school and the parents are getting ready for work. Mia is completing a voice over while all other sound is muted at this point. Mia stops talking and the news comes on cancelling school because of the snow. This is important because it is the reason Mia and her family were on the road when they were at the time of their car accident (I have seen this movie before). The opening to this film is not complex and it does not feature a multitude of different shots, angles, and scenes, but it still outlines the plot and gets the audience hooked.
Film Information: The budget for this film was $11 million and it made over $78 million worldwide. This movie was nominated for 4 awards and it won 3 of them. If I Stay won the Golden Trailer Award for Best Romance TV Spot and two Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie: Drama and Choice Movie Actress: Drama. It was also nominated for the USA Peoples' Choice Awards Favorite Dramatic Movie, but it did not win.
