Distribution Research

Following the path of a movie...

A movie always starts out as an idea.  The next step is creating an outline and using it to promote interest to try and sell the rights to the film.  Once this all happens, a the film is planned: script is written, actors are cast, locations are scouted, etc. Next, the film is completed and sent to the studio for editing.  The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company, thus starting the process of distribution.  The distribution company determines how many copies of the film need to be made and it's in charge of showing the movie to buyers that represent various theatres.  These buyers then negotiate with the distribution company on which movie or movies they want to lease.  Prints are then sent out to the theatres a few days before opening.  Individual theatres show the movie for a specified number of weeks.  This is when the public is able to go to the theatres to view the movie.

In recent years, the film distribution model has changed,  Now video on demand and streaming sites are being utilized in film distribution.  occasionally, some movies skip being shown in theatres and they go straight to these sites.
