Film Project Research 1: The Fault In Our Stars

The first film opening I watched in my research was the first 2 minutes of The Fault In Our Stars.

Short Summary of Opening: The scene opens with a close up of a girl's eyes and she begins speaking in a voiceover. The scene switches and shows a series of short-takes depicting the girl and a boy who are obviously in love.  The montage continues with her voice over.  Then the scene switches to the girl and her mother with a doctor discussing suicide.  It becomes obvious that the girl, named Hazel, is has cancer, but in the final few seconds of the opening we learn that she has depression.  The last part of this opening is the doctor prescribing medicine and strongly encouraging Hazel to attend a support group.

Analysis of Opening: The entire opening, minus the final scene is shot in short takes that jump through a series of events.  The first shot is of the night sky filled with stars.  The camera is panning as a few credits appear.  The screen then switches to a close up of a girl's eyes as she is laying in the grass stargazing.  The beginning of this film is a shot-reverse shot between the girl, Hazel, and the night sky.  The screen goes from the sky, to Hazel's eyes, back to the sky, and then Hazel's full face and shoulders.  This is used to show that she is looking at the stars, which is symbolic since the movie is entitled, The Fault In Our Stars.  There is also a series of seemingly random short takes of different events.  Hazel is shown laughing, then dancing with a boy, and then hugging/kissing the boy.  These shots show time has elapsed and also show the viewer that Hazel is in a relationship with the boy.  The sound of this opening was primarily a voice over given by Hazel.  This is used to show the audience Hazel's thoughts and give insight to the character.  There is also dialogue between the doctor, Hazel, and her mother.  This is used to show the diagnosis of Hazel's depression and the doctor's encouragement to go to a support group.  This is important because it is the reason for the entire love story portrayed in the movie.  In every scene, the characters were in different costumes, which shows that time has elapsed.

Film Information: The budget of this film was $12 million and it made over $300 million around the world.  This movie has been nominated for and won many awards.  There is a long list found on this link...http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2582846/awards   The film was highly profitable and it remains a popular movie since its premier in 2014.
